Everyone who does not work weekends celebrates TGIF without fail at the end of each work week. The two days where we can sit at a café and relax for the day without the stress of work are “divine interventions”, especially after a long and tiring week.
What are some of the best ways to celebrate TGIF in Singapore? Let’s find out!
1) Head to Johor Bahru
Yes, this is one of Singapore’s national hobby. Going across the causeway is appealing because of the currency rates and the often better services we find there. It is the perfect shopping cum eating trip for most of us. However, did you know that JB offers more than just shopping and eating? JB has this awesome go-kart circuit hidden in an ulu place that is worth your time and efforts to find it. It is a lot cheaper than the ones we have in Singapore, and the circuit is a lot bigger too. Known as Permas Go-Kart, it is kid-friendly and will provide you and your family a whole afternoon of fun. If you are heading there with friends, why not try their friendly match to see if you qualify as an F1 driver!

2) Chill out with your friends
If you are a homie and prefer to stay on this side of the causeway, there are still plenty of places to chill out with your friends. Clarke Quay is one of the best places to hang out on the weekends. With Attica leading the pack, Clarke Quay is packed to the brim with clubs and pubs, offering you a night of fun and dance. If you prefer live music, head to Shuffle Bistro where you can treat yourself to fine food, excellent drinks, and fantastic bands!
If you prefer somewhere quieter and wish to just chill, why not head to Seletar area and seek out Youngs Bar? It may look simple to you, but it serves excellent food and has a wide range of drinks. If you want to sit indoors, remember to call and reserve your table in advance as they get very crowded over the weekends. If not, you can chill in their outdoor area where fans are provided to keep you cool in this sweltering weather.

3) Enjoying a sumptuous meal
Singaporeans and foreigners living in Singapore have one thing in common – we are passionate about our food. Our sunny island has a lot to offer in terms of food, but what should you choose if you are looking for a sumptuous meal with your family or friends? Let us introduce our favourites so that you can enjoy a good meal. First up, we love hotpot, and the most popular one is obviously Hai Di Lao. Besides the wide range of ingredients to choose from, they also offer snacks while you wait. On weekends, they may also put up interesting Chinese-cultural performances which are both entertaining and educational for the children. We once experienced a “Bian Lian” performance, in which the performer changes his face mask so fast that you cannot detect the rapid change at all. It was like magic.
If you like BBQ, there is none other better than mookata, because it is so delicious! Our favorite is Mookata, Traditional Thai BBQ. We like this store because we feel it provides us with a great variety of food and also offers set meals which are often really affordable. The best part is its location. Sitting on the eastern side of Singapore, it is accessible for anyone who has spent a day at East Coast Park and craving for some BBQ goodness!

4) Chilling out with games
Games are a great way to spend the weekend. It does not matter whether it is a sport, mahjong at home or a round or two of board games at a café, games help to improve your relationships with your family and friends. While mahjong is best played at home, you can head outside for some board games or perhaps video games to enjoy your weekends. Our favorite hangout place is Play Nation. Located in the Selegie area, their flagship store offers both video games and board games. You can opt for their video games where you can choose between x-box or Wii, and their games are so numerous that you need more than a few visits to play all their games. They also have a board game section where you can chill out with some ridiculously fun board games with your friends! There are also two other locations – one in Scape and the other one at Our Tampines Hub.
5) Netflix is our saviour
Finally, if you prefer to sit on the couch and become a great potato over the weekends, Netflix is the best entertainment you can have. With the huge selection of movies and dramas on Netflix, you will never need to go anywhere except when you head out for meals. Best part, you do not need to pay extra dough since Netflix is subscription-based!
